Notably, Colombia is leading the way in Latin America with its commitment to ocean conservation. The nation has successfully secured 37.6% of its ocean territory as protected, exceeding global targets. Their latest initiative to establish a new marine protected area that includes the Serranilla and Bajo Nuevo coral reefs adds depth to their existing conservation efforts.
In tandem, Chile has announced its efforts to protect crucial marine habitats surrounding the Salas y Gómez and Nazca Ridges, showcasing a rigorous approach to biodiversity preservation as they boast a protective reach of 41% across its national waters.

The Mediterranean isn’t lagging behind either. In a heartfelt speech, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced an expansion of marine protected areas from 12% to an ambitious 32%.
